Christmas in July, Camping weekend - Sat 16th – 17th July
Posted by: troopiepete - 03-07-2011, 04:56 PM - Forum: Past trips - Replies (6)

• Sat 16th – 17th – Social weekend – Christmas in July, Camping weekend at Koreelah camp grounds.

Currently we have no real plans for this activity except for having a good relaxing time, no real work or activities set - basic idea is to just go camping, sit around the Fire and basically have a relaxing weekend, possibly if some want to bring a meal or desert that can be shared you are encouraged to do so but is not a requirement, I was thinking of possibly cooking up a Damper of something like that - ideas and experience in actually making something eatable would be appreciated :-)

As this is so close to Queen marry falls and also in the Vicinity of the Condamine River run I thought it may be worth making this a Route for a club trip with the final destination our camping grounds, all welcome to join the trip our but for those not interested in this part you can simply meet us out there.
Being relatively close to Brisbane it's also possible for you to attend the event but not camp with us - totally up to you.
Either way please let me know if you intend on attending and if you intend on doing the additional Condamine Crossing trip.

What to Bring?
1 - Drinks you wish to consume or share
2 - Food you wish to Consume - and/or share
3 - Camping gear including Chairs and Tables for your use - I will be bringing a solid top plastic table for general use.
4 - Fires are permitted but not much wood is provided so please bring some timber - it will be cold so a nice Fire will help with the night.

I have attached cut out section of map showing the camping site, the Green line is an actual recording of the last trip we made to this location,

Koreelah Camp site, GPS Co-ordentates - 28.306292 S 152.464347 E

This is a pleasant camping spot at the small grassy area beside Koreelah Creek, Facilities: picnic tables, non-flush toilets
wood barbecues (bring your own firewood), Not permitted here: Gathering firewood.

For more site information contact, Phone: 02 6632 0000

Narelle and I took a drive out there on Saturday 2nd July,
This was both a day out for us and a recky all wrapped up into one, To start with we decided to take a different run so headed out to Boonah then up the range towards the Condamine, as with all trips to date the Condamine River road had a road closed sign, I still think this sign is put up by the locals and not an official sign, anyway the track is quite chopped up in some places and quite slippery but is an easy run with all the river crossings being quite shallow.
For a change I decided to follow the GPS and let it take me to the location, unfortunately it took us to the wrong end of White Swamp Road, regardless we followed this and eventually found the camp site, the site looks quite well maintained and had two couples camping, but even with this there was ample space for our little group. The road home we travelled through Beaudesert, although the GPS tells us this is the longer way I personally think it's the best way to Travel and will be the path we take for this trip.

The Plan at this stage will be to Meet at Hungary Jacks for departure at 8am Saturday Morning
Anyone that wants to have Breakfast before leaving should arrive half an hour earlier so as to not hold the trip members up.

A few maps and photo's below.

Please let me know if you intend on attending either by posting on this forum, emailing me or Phoning.

 July 2011 Meeting - 13/07/2011
Posted by: troopiepete - 26-06-2011, 05:45 PM - Forum: General chat - No Replies

Hi Gang

The July meeting will be held at the Club rooms,
amazingly my roster has me available for that night!

One thing to remember this is Club membership renewal time and would also be a good time to introduce new members so please consider bringing a friend.
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month from 7:30pm at the 4WD QLD Hall, 90 Muriel Avenue, Moorooka, or on club outings, please keep an eye on the club forum for each months meeting.

Also for consideration;

• Sat 16th – 17th – Social weekend – Christmas in July, Camping weekend at Koreelah camp grounds.

If you are on the island but not part of our group please say hi when you see us, I will be the one in the Troopy - lol
Our club sits on UHF CH28 so give us a call.

 Levuka Easter 2011
Posted by: troopiepete - 26-04-2011, 01:24 PM - Forum: * NON club trips - No Replies

Levuka - Rain Mud and Fun

Yep my sub title almost said it all, it Rained "no surprise!" there was heaps of Mud but also we all had heaps of fun.
This for Narelle and I was a last minute decision to change our plans from a quiet camp by a stream up near Queen marry falls, to a action packed camping long weekend with some new and old Friends.
The $200 fee covered from Thursday to Tuesday but due to both mine and Narelle's work commitments we could not head down to Levuka until Friday morning, and had to pack up and head home on Monday :-(

So we needed to get as much play and drinking done in the shortened time, we arrived after lunch Friday met up with club members Nigel and Vicky and checked out there camp site, I knew that Finance Dave from the 4WD Action Forum was also camped near by so set about finding them,
[Image: DavePete.jpg]

a few SMS's after we found there camp site and what should we find but Dave's bonnet up and his alternator removed minus one pulley!
We decided to set up camp with Dave and friends so as to get to know them all and help throw in some helpful comments abut his broken Nissan :-)

A long trip the next day in his mate Alan's reliable Landcruiser "sorry Dave had to throw that in :-) " all the way back to Browns Plains then $400+ after and Dave had a new alternator, many beers later and it was installed ....

The past year or so has seen more rain than we have had for many years and Levuka is no exception to this, for that matter I cannot remember it ever being really dry, possibly something to do with it being located in a Rain Forest! but yep mud was the word - not one track was dry with much slipping and sliding going on and well the Troopy while being a capable vehicle the skinny tyres and high profile is not a good mix on slippery slopes, so while I did my own share of recoveries the old girl had to be pulled out several times - make that 3 times in a row!

Nigel being the 4WD nut he is decided to give one of the play areas a go, now this area in the dry is difficult as the ruts are very deep and people with larger tyres than us often play in this spot, in the wet it's a completely different ball game as you just cannot see how deep the holes really are... maybe we should have walked this one!

The park with the help of a 4WD club usually puts on a Trivia Night run and this year was no exception, the outing was limited to 65 cars so you needed to be in early, mind you with that many cars and us being car No.5 we were home long before some people had even started the run, we had something like 29 questions to answer - some easy and some hard - I mean common guys did you not know some of us don't follow any sport! but jokes aside it was well done including a one handed - combined effort task of screwing bolts and nuts on in a timed event, I think Narelle and I managed 9, how did you go?
We also had to remember what was on a table, photographic memory would have been good for that one!
The track was only on the easy areas but due to the wet conditions even these were hard at times with a few people being winched out, but I am pleased to say we were not one of them - for a change :-)

I wish we had more photo's and maybe if our new friends can send me some I will add them later but we were just having way too much fun to be shooting photo's and well it was way too muddy to be getting out all the time just to take photo's
Would I recommend the event - for sure and I think we will be there again next year, only thing keeping us away apart for no 4WD would be a huge trip to an even better location... or maybe no cash!
Either way I would recommend it be the destination of choice for Easter 2012.

* Maybe next year it should be a River City 4WD Club trip!

 The Springs 4x4 - day trip - Sunday 17th April 2011
Posted by: troopiepete - 26-03-2011, 10:34 AM - Forum: Past trips - Replies (1)

The River City 4WD Club is planning on a Day trip to the Springs 4x4 park on Sunday the 17th of April,
The trip will depart from McDonalds Yamanto, 8am Sunday, see you there a bit earlier for Breakfast.
Visitors are welcome so if you wish to attend please let me or Victor know.

****
There has been a bit of confusion regarding the meeting point for the trip this Sunday,
Originally it has been advertised as the McDonalds Yamanto, most of us have no idea where this is so the meeting point has been relocated to the Mobile Service station on the main road just before you get to Amberley Air force base turn off.

We will be on UHF Ch8 so if you get confused please give us a call or phone me on 0427600181

 Simpson to beyond 2010
Posted by: troopiepete - 08-03-2011, 02:41 PM - Forum: Past trips - Replies (1)

Hi

Many of you would be aware of the Big trip some of us did last year, some maybe not.
In brief the trip was in two parts, firstly "The wedding" and Secondly "Simpson to beyond"
The Wedding was for our members Nigel and Vicky who's wedding was on the top of Big Red (west of Birdsville)
As weddings go this was quite different with us all braving the elements - mostly wind and sand - but in a whole was a huge success and will be remembered for many years.

The second part saw a group of us depart the very next day after the wedding from Birdsville, we headed straight for Big Red then out across the sand hills towards Poepells Corner.. across many flooded lakes and mud pits that are usually nice hard and flat salt pans, including a slippery mud path heading from Purnie Bore to Dalhousie Springs..

The trip was intense and way too much to cover in text alone, but over the next few posts I will attempt to cover the story of the trip that was.

 Cape York 2012
Posted by: troopiepete - 07-03-2011, 09:28 PM - Forum: Past trips - Replies (3)

Hi

It's early days yet but I am currently planning a trip to the Cape around June 2012 with the intention of making a Quick trip to the top as direct as possible - then a slow trip back stopping at as many places possible staying in several of them for a few nights, do some fishing, sight seeing and general relaxing where possible.

Currently I have allowed 4 weeks in total for the trip but it may be possible to extend this, even possible to separate and head off in separate directions part way through the trip, some may want to head up to Australia's most easterly island or something like that.

I really have not put any real planning into this yet but it's still over a year away so plenty of time to add ideas and such.

Now all we have to sort out is the weather - if anyone could put a word in it would be appreciated Big Grin

* the trip is currently not listed as an official club trip as it has not been approved by the board yet, either way it will be happening.

Hi

This is restricted trip with a max of 8 cars Victor Leading; it will be taking us into restricted access areas.

Meet us at the Beaudesert - Hungary Jacks - Departing at 8am
Normally when we meet at such places some of us have our Breakfast there, so feel free to join us but ensure you get there by at least 7:30am so you can eat in comfort.

March meeting:
During the Trip we will be holding the March meeting - hence no meeting at the club rooms

About the trip:
We are planning on travelling into areas that normally you would not have access to, needles to say we have permission and the required keys to visit several un-used trails and camp in an area that is remote and isolated.

If you wish to join us please drop me a line - President@rivercity4wdclub.net
Or post your interest on this forum - but remember you need to register first.
