Corner Country Trip
Hello Fellow River Cityiers

I was just wondering about something

It is a popular subject that we are going to visit 'cornrer country' as a major trip of 2012

My question is that we need to determine a definate date and length

As for me (and maybe others) I need to request my 2012 very very soon

Also I need to know for how long

Re: Corner Country Trip
Depends on what dates you're looking at Johnny, if the dates fit in with my trip to the Boulia Camel Races then I'd be very interested.

I've been to the Corner Country before, but am always interested in trips out that way.

Dates for Corner Country
Hello to Possible Desert Drivers

I have been researching dates for the above

The forum says it is a goer in June-July HOORAY I say to myself

The desert is a great place in the winter so many things are just right

Anyway mid year school holidays are
Saturday 23-6-2012 until Sunday 9-7-2012
That works out to be 16 days of possible adventuring

If these dates can be decided upon people can now work on arranging time off

I am going over the map of this area that we travelled in 08 and will/can come up with a possible trip plan

Sounds good to me Johnny. After these dates of 'Adventuring' I'll just carry on up to Boulia for the Camel races and meet my mate there.

If the Camels do the right thing and win me some cash...nope that doesn't sound good.

If I make some cash from the Camels...nope that doesn't sound right.

I'll be mates with anything which makes me some cash...mmm probably worse.

A winning Camel can be mans best friend...getting closer.

If I make some money from placing bets on the winning Camels then I'll be happy.

Re: Dates for Corner Country
However you put it those beasts make one hell of a noise out in the desert while honking at each other during the night!

Question for you Mick what is the actual racing dates at Boulia ?
This sounds like something some others may wish to participate in, also do you know what the camping arrangements are for this time as I would expect the population of the town would swell somewhat at this time.

13 -15th July Pete. From memory camping with facilities are available at the Showgrounds and last year they charged $35 - $40 for the week leading up to and including the races. Apparently it's growing every year that's why we're going this year.

Re: Dates for Corner Country Direction of Travel
Hello

We can indeed start planning the route

Because of the Boulia event we can do a journey that takes in the race dates so those with time available can leave us and go

My suggested plan was clockwise visiting Birdsville first but anticlockwise is not a big change

We can do almost most things to suite many as possible

Re: Dates for Corner Country
Either way is ok by me.

I'll have to call into Charleville anyway, my wife has to fly home just before the school holidays finish. I'll continue up to Boulia after that.

Re: Dates for Corner Country
Hi Gang

I recently sent out an email asking for input for this trip,
The Idea is for us to meet and discuss possible places to visit and sights to see, some of us have been on many of the roads and visited the towns but may well have driven past things of interest so do your homework and find out what there is to see out west, the worst that will happen is we run out of time and have to spend less time somewhere else

So the plan at this stage is for Saturday the 18th of Feb at Sharyn's house, possibly afternoon with the idea of a BYO BBQ or lunch time, need to sort that part out but as it's directly after the next club meeting we should be able to work the finer parts out.

A few things to remember there are some permits required either for driving or camping, I am trying to clarify this and should have the information before the meeting.

Re: Dates for Corner Country
Hope there's no more rain out there between now and June.

According to the attached Bulletin Coongie Lakes may be closed for 2012. Walkers Crossing, the Bore Track and a couple of other areas are closed at the moment dues to rain and/or flooding.

Re: Dates for Corner Country
Yep that is always going to be an issue as long as our Sun is going through this active solar cycle...
Anyone also noticed that it rains on a new moon?

The final trip will very much depend on what happens between now and the actual trip, tracks like this can open on a days notice and can close just as quick!

It appears that any permits we will require are available at Innaminka so we can leave this decision up to the actual trip dates.
It would not be the first time we have had to totally change a trip mid stream :-)

We only need to be in the area for a day or two so have sent an email in to see if there is a day or week pass.

Re: Desert Parks Pass for Corner Country
I sent an email asking about day passes and so on as the normal Desert pass is $125, it covers basically the entire desert area and for an entire year, if we were planning a Desert crossing this would be a much better idea but as Big Red is still in QLD a day or week pass should be sufficient.

This is the reply,
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good morning,

Thank you for your enquiry, yes you can go into the Innamincka Trading Post or the Innamincka Hotel and purchase an entry or camping permit for the parks that you will be visiting. Entry is $9.00 per vehicle and camping is $17.00 per vehicle per night.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate in contacting me.

Thank you

Roslyn Butler

So it seems out best option would be to pay as we go, this way we will only pay for what we need and if we change our minds about staying we will not miss out! I have been told there is free camping at or near the Dig Tree so this may even be a better option for the camping side.

Re: Desert Parks Pass for Corner Country
Thanks for making these inquiries Pete.

As a matter of interest, has it been decided which way will the group will be traveling or at least where the groups final stop over will be?

I'm in the throws of planning my trip to Boulia & want to make it fit into the Corner Country trip that's all. (Hopefully it'll fit)

Thanks

Re: Courner Country - Please register your intention to atte
Hi Guys/Gals

My Father is going to be my passenger and has a few friends in places we are going so may be able to introduce us to some of the local sights, for an example St George has a few wineries and places of interest, this will be our first camping spot as it gives us an easy first day, chance to realise what you forgot and possibly re-organise your car to better suit your travelling needs.
We should hit the town some time after lunch so it should give us an easy camp site setup while still being able to do a short trip to see a few sites, the pub there has a very good meal so this may also be a good first dinner for the trip.
Our next camp site will be in a Nat Park, still working on details but will get them out soon.

If you have places you would like to see please let us all know, likewise when I publish a itinerary it's by no way fixed in cement and can change - even while on the trip especially if the weather forces us to.

One thing that I would really love to so is to camp out in the Simpson desert and to make it out to Popels corner, this is a 2 - 3 day trip depending on how we go and we don't need a permit - just camping.

One last note:

If you are travelling alone and would like someone to share the driving and cost my Uncle "Trevor" my fathers young Brother - a twin - would love to travel with us and has asked if he could jump aboard, if you think this may work I can organise a meeting so you can get to know him.

On that note I am going to organise a camping trip sometime after Easter so my Father can get an idea of what he needs sleeping and camping wise for this trip, it will most likely be mid week and thinking of doing a camp on the North Noosa - Teewa Beach - over night or possibly two.
If you are interested in joining us let me know and I will let you know when it will be.

So to recap:
Itinerary out soon,
Some Desert Travel involved so sand flags are required.
Need a seat for my uncle,
Test trip on soon.

Re: Courner Country - Please register your intention to atte
Hi Fellow Travellers

I have put together a very rough itinerary of our trip and places that members have indicated they would like to go.
This Planner is in no way set in stone and may change if enough people would like to see something not indicated plus if we get to a destination and decide that the place warrants more time then provided we can still return home in time then the days may drift in or out a little.
likewise if road closures affect our travel then it may see a completely different set of places.

The trip home from Birdsville is currently not planned, we currently have a few spare days up our sleeves so who knows, but even taking a slow trip you can make it back from Birdsville to Brisbane in under 3 days.

Thanks Pete
My wife will definitely be coming along now, at first the timings weren't right for her. We will have to be back in Charleville by Monday afternoon the 2 July in order to catch a flight back to Brisbane on the 3 July.
mmmmm....might even motel it that night.

Obviously our plans won't have any bearing on what the rest of the group wants to see or do. We'll just leave Birsdville to make it back to Charleville by the afternoon of the 2nd.
