Sundown National Park 11/12 May 2013
The club is going to Sundown National Park on the weekend of 11/12 May to do some track maintainance. A couple of hours work mainly clearing vegetation from the road side of the original track pushed in by the miners during the early 1900's. What to bring, some sturdy boots, gloves, hat, if you have them machete, axe and possibly a brush cutter.

Meeting times for this are all at the Shell, Aratula about 60 minutes from Brisbane on the Cunningham Highway. It is the last servo on the right, pass the pub and you've gone too far (or maybe just far enough). Going up Friday, depart at 2.00pm, or Saturday depart at 7.30am. About another 90 minutes from here to the park entrance and anything up to 60 minutes on the track to the campsite.

Time to start putting up who's coming and what days.

I'm a Friday traveller.

Hi Group,

I was originally planning on heading up early Friday but have now been forced to change our plans due to a death in the family of our 6 year old Niece, Daughter of Narelle's Brother, the Funeral will be held on the Friday morning and I don't expect to get away too early.
While the death of a young child is never good it's the end of a year long fight with a Brain stem Tumor, the past week has been a struggle for all the family as she went down hill fast - may Samantha now be in a better place

I have intended to camp in a remote and isolated - non camping are that is actually quite close to the track we are working on and is not all that easy to find so you will need to communicate your intention to attend and arrange to be guided to the camp site or provided a map, I do not wish to post this location on the forum as we don't want too many people knowing about the spot.

I have had a look at the weather forecast for the weekend. I would bring a raincoat, most likely not needed however I would bring anything that you have that will keep you warm. The temperature forecast for Stanthorpe is low of 5 degrees, Ballandean will easily be 5 degrees lower than that and Sundown in the lower areas will be ....... Well you won't know until you get there. If you are wearing ugg boots, beanies and gloves you won't be alone. Stanthorpe is already well and truly into the frost's at this time of year. Daytime however will be quiet pleasant.

Cool - not wanting to pun the weather 8-)

The cold can be a pain - and painful.. But it makes a camp and a camp fire worth having!
I think all of the "rubbish" we pick up will be used for keeping the camp warm Wink

The funeral is at 11am, so I don't think it will be much before 3pm that I will get away.

Jason, Johnny and myself are meeting at BP Aratula at 1pm on Friday and heading up. Peter and possibly Sharon will be coming up later in the afternoon, unsure of the time. Victor is travelling up in the wee small hours of Saturday morning. We are camping at Burrows Waterhole at the end of the track, give or take a 90 minute drive. If you are coming later start calling on channel 28 and hopefully we're tuned and and let you know where we are.

Vale Angel Samantha - you are fondly remembered and much loved.

Thanks to all everyone who attended I had a great time. Was good to "escape for the weekend" to get down and very dusty with 4Low. 8-)

It has been too long since re-discovering that I still really don't like off-camber leaning or having wheels flapping in the breeze :?
I only needed "technical help" on 2 occasions [ a big thankyou Jason - totally appreciated your "eyes" Big Grin ] ... bloody engine bays on Tritons are too damned long and lose sight of everything when I need most to be able to see Confusedhock: but I got there in the end.

It is a bit hard to have faith on wheel placement around big rocks when all I can see is tree canopies and blue sky Confusedhock:

Thankyou also to Darryl for your dampers - they were delicious Big Grin
Camp oven stews are great when sitting beside a nice hot campfire too. Thanks to Peter [for the stew] and Johhny for the fires.

Thanks very much again, everyone, for a top weekend Big Grin Big Grin

Re: Sundown National Park 11/12 May 2013
Well the plan for Sundown National Park, track maintenance was put in place at Wednesday night’s meeting. There were a few coming down on Friday with another on Saturday.

Friday 1pm was the meeting time, with Aratula BP the meeting place. When I arrived I was advised by Johnny that he can now vouch for the pies at the servo. About this time we heard Jason on the radio advising that he was running late. Anyway, by 2.00pm we were all together and heading for Sundown, with a quick stop in Stanthorpe for forgotten supplies. We hit the main gate at the park and paid of registration fees. Then a drive along the tracks that we would be working on. By the time we reached Burrows Waterhole it was dark, start a fire, set up camp and cook dinner. About this time a damper was on the coals and Peter and Sharon arrive. Then the question in relation to honey or jam was asked, only Peter with a little marmalade and butter. This sufficed for the rest of the weekend. Not to self, butter, jam and honey. We all sat around a warm campfire for a few hours before bed.

Saturday morning was soon upon us and after breakfast another damper and about the time it was ready, Victor and Victoria arrived. The new plan for today was travel down to Rats Castle and have a look at the work that was needed down there and head over to the track we were working on. Anyway, the tour of Rats Castle from below and above took most of the day. A fantastic drive up and down the steepest of hills with some rock climbing onto Rats Castle was quiet exhilarating. About an hour before dark saw us arrive at what is now known as the River City Winter Camp where again a campfire, damper and drinks were the order of the day along with the all in bush stew. A fantastic stew it was, particularly I you enjoy curry!!!!

Sunday saw us awake and not long after some track maintenance at the entry to where we were camped. Back to camp, another damper for morning tea, pack up and travel along the track and do some maintenance as we go saw us at the park gates about 12.30. A short drive into Ballendean and stop for air and ice cream and then homeward bound. Another great week end away.

Hello Peoples

It was definately a great weekend away

With good people who could forget little miss Cox

Darryl thanks for the photo of me

The most memorable thing was definately the lack of yummy toppings for the dampers
