Not a bad trip, Been to all places except for the Birdsville Track between Walkers Crossing (West of Innamincka) and Birdsville as in 2008 we traveled from Innamincka via Walkers Crossing to the Birdsville track then headed south to Marree.

If you have some spare time while in Birdsville why not consider a trip out to Poeppel Corner, it takes roughly 3 days extra to do it and enjoy the Desert but no permits needed provided you stay out of SA Angel

Sure some have now done this several times but many others have not so please give it a good think.. also the 3rd day gives you plenty of time to have a play on Big Red before heading back to Birdsville..

I hope you get good numbers for this trip, would love to go but possibly will be tied up elsewhere .. will see :-)

Hello

It will be a great trip

I agree with you Pete about being there before

Cast your mind back to 08 with John D & uncle Bob C

They had both been there before and were able to share their experiences with us first timers

So I hope to go and thus share my enjoyment with any first timers like they did for us

Johnny

RE: 2015 Big Trip out West to Simpson Desert
Poeppel corner is on the agenda! (read the itinerary blurb) Angry
Google maps wont track a road there?? not even with a geo reference Huh
so the maps only show Birdsville, why was it named so? Idea

Wikipedia:- Birdsville was known as Diamantina Crossing from 1881.[3] There are a number of different theories as to the origin of the name. One is that the name derives from the prolific bird life in the district.[4] The other is that a store was established by Percy Bird and George Field and they called it Birdfield. However, in 1882, G. and R. Wills, of Adelaide, misaddressed a consignment of goods as going to Birdsville and that name stuck.[5] Another is that a man named Burt established a store and called it Burtsville which corrupted to Birdsville.[6] Whatever its origin, by 1882, the name Birdsville was in common use[7] and was formalised at the proclamation of town in 1887. Dodgy

Amazing Fact: Once there at Poeppel's you have 3 different time zones
you can celebrate New Years eve 3 times over a couple hours
so don't party too hard on the first one
you can also do this at Camerons and Surveyor Generals Corner too

Note it gets hot out there over summer recording a high of 49.5 Celsius this being the hottest days ever recorded in OZ
so if you happen to have a cold beer at hand you will certainly feel like a king and gain a lot of friends too

Its about 6 to 7 hours driving time from Birdesville to poepels depending on season .If Eyes creek is up it will take longer especially if you have to use the Northern bypass. Some shots of Maps

Yep sorry about not checking the entire trip itinerary..

Would be cool to do new years out there but unfortunately due to the fact it's actually quite possible very hot so Parks close the Desert during summer Dodgy
Apparently we are not capable of catering for the temps out that way so they stop us from trying Huh

Just a few photo's from our 2010 trip,

Hello Peoples

This is going to be a great trip and as such needs a name

So how about (only my suggestion) we now refer to it as THE WESTERN RUN

Johnny
